Brief history of the race
At the end of 1800, we had in Belium a lot of dogs guide of flocks, of heterogeneous types and with different coats. A group of very passionate dog breeders together with Professor A. Reul, of the veterinary school of Cureghem a real pioneer and the founder of the breed, attempted to make some order within the breed. Between 1891 and 1897 the breed was officially born. On the 29 September 1891 the “Club du Chien de Berger Belge” was founded in Bruxelles. In the same year, on the 15th November, the Professor A.Reul organized at Cureghem an assembly of 117 dogs. This allowed taking a census and carrying out a selection of the best subjects. In the years that followed a real selection was made possible via the practice of consanguinity breeding. On the 3rdApril 1892, the club du Chien de Berger Belge was able to write down the very first detailed standardized breed. Only one breed with three variety of coat was admitted. However, as it was said at the time, the Belgium Shepherd was considered a common working dog and therefore not a prestigious breed. It followed that only in 1901 the very first Belgium Shepherd dogs were registered in the books of origins of the Societe Royale Saint Hubert (L.O.S.H.). In the years that followed, Belgium Shepherd dog breeders’ executives set themselves to work with the aim of unifying the type of breed and to correct any possible defect. We therefore can affirm that towards the 1910 the type and character of the Belgium Shepherd was set. In the course of the history of the Belgium Shepherd the different varieties and colors that were admitted gave rise to a lot of controversies. In comparison, there were never disagreements about the morphology, the character and the attitude to work of the animal.
